Read the entire, excellent synopsis of The Marriag Read the entire, excellent synopsis of The Marriage of Figaro from @canadianopera and still have NO idea what’s going on except there’s loads of romance, lots of stunningly beautiful singing and a happy ending.

So looking forward to seeing it with MOTH, who got for the tickets as my Christmas prezzie. MOTH is equally confused but very excited, he says, about all the hiding and eavesdropping to be done on stage.

This is the year I pledge to make tech work for me This is the year I pledge to make tech work for me, rather than feeling controlled or intimidated by it.

To start, I’ll cut down on consuming media that doesn’t enrich my life*, and focus on creating content that truly reflects who I am.

Having said that, I’m on board for smart-home tech that solves some of life’s little annoyances, like fumbling in the dark for keys at the front door.

To get a feel for new security technology, I tested two units from @schlagecanada.

The Encode Smart Wi-Fi deadbolt lets you create multiple unique codes for tradespeople, dog-sitters, support workers, cleaners, etc. Codes can be deleted or changed.

I love that I could pop out for a walk or a chore without a key; also useful for emergency access by family or friends.

The Encode Plus that’s just out adds Apple HomeKit functionality. @wirecutter called it one of the easiest smart locks to install and operate: built-in WiFi tech simplifies set-up and ensures a secure connection. It works with its own app, and operates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

With it, I could unlock the door with my iPhone or Apple Watch or with a key in Apple Wallet. It also works with Siri.

That kind of hands-free operation would be terrific when my arms are full of groceries or library books.

For more on style options for both locks, click the link in my bio.

*Disclaimer: Not giving up Sister Wives, tho.

This is a sponsored post. The client dd not approve or review it. I partnered with Schlage because I think they make terrific product at affordable prices.

On International Use What You’ve Got Day, I give On International Use What You’ve Got Day, I give you day ten of my holiday floral arrangement.

It’s only today that I’m adding the greenery and crimson roses to my dried arrangement, and I’ll get a few more days from the leftovers in the second pic.

I’ll go out later to scavenge branches for the permanent arrangement.

I am so grateful to be able to indulge in this little luxury and I thought you might like to see it:)

Birth is wholly magical and wholly human. That’s Birth is wholly magical and wholly human. That’s why stories about it exist across all cultures and theologies, since the very first narrative.

To invite it into the world is a gesture of hope. Especially in these times.

That’s why I set up a crèche this year. Not because it’s the first or even most compelling birth narrative (altho deffo top five imho). But to salute and embrace all those who engage in the miracle and those who pray, hope, and demand that the living, and the most vulnerable among them, are treated with compassion, equality, and profound respect.

That to me is the worthiest sentiment to espouse on Christmas Day. And so I do.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Kwanza, and love to everyone, everywhere. Love thy neighbour.

Christmas/holiday idea alert. Set up a coffee sta Christmas/holiday idea alert.

Set up a coffee station next to the bed! Put milk or cream (okay, cream) in a thermos overnight. Also nice is a thermos of hot chocolate to mix with fresh-made coffee. #mocha

Hide cookies/croissants in a tin.

Such a delightful way to wake up - especially at my house, where the kitchen is two floors down.

If there’s a tv in the room, watch a sappy holiday movie (no news!!!) while you sip. Or listen to 🎶

If you fall back asleep you win a special 🏆- which is a nap later in the day.

This is an @zwilling_ca coffeemaker that I’m testing for an upcoming column on warm winter bevivies. So far loving this machine.

Odd reading for the Christmas season perhaps. But Odd reading for the Christmas season perhaps. But I picked this up @torontolibrary after seeing the 1931 film version of Frankenstein with Boris Karloff as the monster.

What he does with his hands alone is worth watching the film for. On a lighter note, fans of Mel Brooks’ Frankenstein will most def notice similarities in lighting and set design:)

Tying a contemporary story about AI, self-expression, and how we define life in the inevitability of death, to Mary Shelley’s masterpiece is genius.

This book is fundamentally, like its inspiration, a ripping yarn. But it also disturbs with always uncomfortable questions about mortality and the meaning of life and identity.

I’ll add a paragraph here after I finish the book. Which should be soon, as I can’t put it down.

In the meantime, thanks for asking, my mood if fine, as when I’m not grappling with existential themes, I’m also now watching ALL the old holiday movies. With cookies.

Happy Saturday, fellow hepcats. This quilt is old Happy Saturday, fellow hepcats.

This quilt is older than me and almost as wrinkled. It would have been made in Missouri early 1900s. Lovely colours and very fine stitching.

Funny how good we both still 👀?!?!:)

Enjoy the day. Rest if you can. Luv u.

HELLO LOVELY PEOPLE: Two beautiful things happen HELLO LOVELY PEOPLE:

Two beautiful things happened to me this week.

ONE:
I went to the desk at the North York Central Library to tell them I had lost a book and wanted to pay for it. The young person there suggested I wait a few days because it could turn up. No, I said, I know I lost it in a hotel room in Madrid.

As she entered the info for payment, I said what I was most sorry about was that I had been at such a good part - it was why I brought the book with me on the trip, and why I must have fallen asleep with it and left it in a bed:)

Without skipping a beat, she looked up the book and began having a copy transferred to NYCL.
The next day, she left me a phone message telling me what day the book would be in, and that she hoped I enjoyed the rest of it. It was an extremely excellent experience.

TWO:
I met Andrew & Jamie Metrick @elte showroom (80 Ronald Ave.) to catch the final days of their inaugural exhibit of a contemporary fine art series.

I'll write more about it soon in POST Media, and tag the pics soon of works by artists Frank Bowling, Marcia Hafif, Peter Halley, Tony Lewis, and Jason Moran.

Jumping on now to say, tho, that if you're in #Toronto and you can get to the store before the exhibit closes at 5:30 on Saturday, you definitely should.

Exceptionally interesting to experience this art-diverse in age of artists, style, process- in the context of such fine furniture and design.

There's a stunning collection of art books, along with a seating area where they can be enjoyed. I could have stayed there another hour.

I was very grateful to have the exhibit's curator, Robert Wainstein, talk me through the works, and help me see the focus on process and surface. Such deep knowledge and so generous with it. A wonderfully fascinating way to spend an hour.

Honestly, you should go but if you can't or don't, watch for a spring 2023 show.
