Just one of a series of works by Mary Cassatt and Just one of a series of works by Mary Cassatt and Helen Galloway McNicoll on exhibit until September at @agotoronto

These Impressionist paintings are extremely beautiful in the decorative sense - the brushwork, use of light and colour, the way subjects are dressed - I found myself almost falling into them, they're so visually captivating.

But there are subversive notes that you can - with a little help from the gallery notes - start to see. And once you see them, you see them everywhere.

Here, in The Litter Worker by Canadian Helen McNicoll, I see a girl/young woman at work. But she is surrounded by an open landscape, so she's not constrained. She's also very confident in her task. Even while she is not at the centre of the frame, she balances the weight of the bucket by extending her arm - taking up space and moving forward. Love that for her.

That's just me, though.

If you want to discuss this further, you should probably go to the show. I might see you there because I'm deffo going back,

You know how I'm always trilling to my millions of You know how I'm always trilling to my millions of worldwide followers about how I adore getting old?

In truth, there IS one thing I really do not enjoy.

It's watching some of my age co-hort turn into dried-up, withered old apple people-the kind that smell like brewing alcohol with a touch of rot.

Not on the outside, of course, as there's just no excuse for that these days.

My own increasingly withered face is now labeled "a choice", I note. I would love to talk to you about that over tea and cookies. You're buying, naturally.

It's the shrinking of scope and imagination and empathy and sense of responsibility I see from my generation that I'm talking about.

Bit of a shock, really. Who knew that I'd find myself frequently wanting to shove an ear trumpet in someone's face and shout, "WHEN DID YOU GET TO BE SO SOUR, SNARKY SNARKEREENO?"

It makes me alternately sad and angry. On the other hand, an advantage of aging is that you see that many things making you angry or sad can simply be filed under Who the Fuck Cares Friday?, agenda records for which are wiped monthly.

Want to be a grumpy granny? Enjoy! But also adieu. I am not sticking around for rants against the technology, body positivity, media, avocado recipes, musical tastes, employment decisions/behavior, and sartorial choices of youngsters.

And I don't know where others hang out, but I am meeting incredible young people these days. Maybe some of you need to get out of your recliners and hit the streets to regain a sense of perspective.

Personally, I find it easier and easier to be kind and generous and open to younger people as I get older. And doing so gives me real happiness.

If I haven't yet convinced the more socially and psychologically constipated among you that aging doesn’t have to mean upping your nasty old auntie factor, try mixing a little Valium or weed with your Geritol. It might bring your emotional giddy'up back.
